Stretching from Exmouth to Seaton beyond to Swanage in Dorset, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a testament to the Earth's remarkable history, spanning 185 million years.

The Jurassic Coastline in Devon showcases an unparalleled geological narrative, with dramatic cliffs, hidden caves, coastal stacks and barrier beaches offering a glimpse into the Earth's ancient past. Each step along this unspoiled coastline unveils a "walk through time," revealing the geological wonders of the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous Periods.

Explore the Jurassic Coast

One fantatsic way to view the Jurassic Coast is from the cliff tops – and walking is the perfect way to do so. The Devon Jurassic Coastline also forms part of the South West Coast Path, with hundreds of miles of footpaths to be explored and enjoyed. The South West Coast Path has a 7 day walking itinerary where you can explore the beautiful coastal villages and beaches along the way.

Some say the best way to explore the Jurassic Coast's staggering views and scenery is from the water! Whether this be by kayak, paddleboard or even a cruise. Find watersports providers in the region here and for a mesmerising trip along the waters.

If you want to enjoy the beauty of the Jurassic Coastline without walking, take a Jurassic Coast cruise with one of our boat trip providers to see the spectacular coastline in all its glory.

Top Places of Interest:

Exmouth

Exmouth is one of the oldest and most picturesque seaside towns in Devon. The town is the gateway to the World Heritage Jurassic Coast and has two miles of sandy beach, which is perfect for water sports and walks.

Located on the Southeast coast of Devon where the river Exe meets the sea and close to Exeter, this vibrant town offers plenty of walking and cycling routes like The Exe Estuary Trail. Additionally, there are plenty of local and independent shops and restaurants to enjoy all year round.

Sandy Bay and Straight Point

Just a stone's throw away lies Sandy Bay, a picturesque stretch of golden sand framed by rugged cliffs. Ideal for sunbathing, swimming and water sports, Sandy Bay is a haven for beach enthusiasts of all ages. Nearby, Straight Point offers stunning vistas of the coast and serves as an excellent spot for birdwatching and picnicking.

Budleigh Salterton

A short distance away lies Budleigh Salterton, a charming coastal town renowned for its unspoiled beaches, colorful beach huts, and quaint shops. This hidden gem provides a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, inviting visitors to unwind and reconnect with nature located within the East Devon National Landscape (previously AONB).

Ladram Bay

Ladram Bay, a breathtaking bay flanked by striking red sandstone cliffs. Explore secluded coves, marvel at towering sea stacks or embark on a boat trip to discover hidden sea caves. Nearby, High Peak offers panoramic views of the Jurassic Coast, providing a perfect vantage point for capturing unforgettable sunsets.

Sidmouth

Sidmouth's coastline is dominated by the vivid red sandstone cliff which dates back to the Triassic period. Along the front is the Millennium Walkway which stretches the length of the beach, providing the perfect background for an afternoon stroll. Sidmouth Beach and the adjacent Jacob' Ladder Beach are two family friendly beaches, ideal for safe swimming and rock pooling at low tide with great on-site facilities.

Branscombe

Nestled between Seaton and Sidmouth, lies the tranquil village of Branscombe. Renowned as one of the most serene and picturesque villages along the Jurassic Coastline, Branscombe captivates visitors with its timeless charm. Believed to be the longest village in the country, its streets gracefully descend through a stunning valley to meet the sea, adorned with vibrant cottages and charming thatched buildings.

Beer

Sitting next to Branscombe the picturesque village of Beer offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and coastal charm. Encircled by majestic white chalk cliffs, its shingle Beer beach is a hive of activity, with fishing boats still plying their trade and bringing in the day's fresh catches, particularly renowned for its abundant mackerel.

Seaton

Seaton boasts stunning vistas and pristine natural surroundings. With the South West Coast Path and Seaton Wetlands Nature Reserve just a stroll away, it's an ideal destination for immersing oneself in the beauty of nature. Seaton is the final town on the Jurassic Coastline in Devon before continuing on to Dorset.

Fossil Hunting on the Jurassic Coast

One of the best things about the Jurassic Coast is the plethora of fossils that have been discovered on the beaches and cliffs. Fossil hunting is a great pastime for adults and kids alike – however making sure you are safe whilst fossil hunting is of upmost importance.

Only collect loose fossils you find amongst the sand and rocks – never pick at the cliffs. Ensure you check the tide times, and stay away from the cliff face. Please abide by the Code of Conduct. In particular, do not dig into the cliffs or beach, observe local signs, only take what you need and be safe!
