Newton Ferrers is a little slice of tranquillity just 10 miles from Plymouth. Surrounded by ancient woodland and creeks, the village of Newton Ferrers sits on the banks of the beautiful Yealm estuary. It’s a hidden gem packed with wildlife and has a secret, tranquil atmosphere. If you’re looking for thatched cottages and a lovely pub in the centre, then this village is everything you’d expect from a picture postcard idyll.

History of Newton Ferrers

Newton was recorded in the Doomsday book, and then named after the Norman Nobleman ‘Ferrers’ becoming Newton Ferrers. There was a lifeboat station at Newton Creek until 1927, and fishing was a major source of income for the area’s inhabitants for a long time.

During the Middle Ages and right up until the 19th-century, this part of the UK was synonymous with smugglers. As such, up and down the coastline evidence of smuggling routes and shipwrecked boats can be found.

In more recent times, as roads improved and fishing became uneconomic, Newton has settled into providing a haven for yachts and sailboats, and accommodation for holiday makers.

Things to do in Newton Ferrers

Newton Ferrers lies within the South Devon National Landscape. If you’re looking for peace, tranquillity and a leisurely day on or off the water, the charming Newton Creek is a narrow tidal inlet on the River Yealm and perfect for exploring the area. The Warren is a very beautiful stretch of coastline nearby, and circular walking routes take you along the sea and through ancient woodlands.

A real hidden gem for you to discover is the nearby and unspoilt Mothecombe Beach. Large, sheltered and ideal for bathing,  Mothecombe beach is privately owned and maintained by the Flete Estate and open to the public every day of the year. The rock pools are a favourite with children looking for critters and creepy crawlies. The beach is a 10-15 minute drive and can be easily accessed from the car park on foot via a woodland path. Also located on the estate, Mothecombe House and gardens are situated above the beach, at the mouth of the Erme Estuary.

Food & Drink in Newton Ferrers

Newton Ferrers boats a terrific independent deli-cafe serving local and fresh produce, plus there’s one pub on this side of the estuary (the rest of the pubs in the area being located just across the river’s mouth in Noss Mayo). Serving local brews and fish straight from the sea, this tavern is always filled with the sound of locals and visitors alike having a great time. Family-friendly and dog-friendly, the pub is the perfect place to sit and relax after a busy day of exploring the South Hams.

Events in Newton Ferrers

Held in the summer every year, the Yealm regatta is a prominent date in the village calendar and sees Newton Creek, Noss Creek and the River Yealm come alive with rowing and sailing races as well as other competitions both on and off the water.

Something a little different

For a unique experience, explore the tranquil Yealm estuary by boat or take a ferry ride to the neighbouring village of Noss Mayo. This leisurely journey provides a different perspective of the picturesque surroundings and allows you to appreciate the interconnected beauty of these coastal communities.

Newton Ferrers is a coastal haven where history meets natural splendour. Whether you're exploring its maritime past, engaging in water activities, enjoying local cuisine, or embarking on a scenic boat ride, Newton Ferrers promises a quintessential Devonian experience along the banks of the River Yealm.
